XePulse™ 2 HID pulsing system for XeStrike™ ballasts

Note: As of Sept 2011 we renamed our XePulse™ models as follows:
XePulse™ 1 formerly simply XePulse™
XePulse™ 2 formerly XePulse™ II

US Patent # 7,615,941 for HID pulsing

Actual pulsing sequence (wig-wag)

Actual XeVision® XePulse™ 2 pulsing sequence (wig-wag) on a Glasair I RG using our XePulse™ 1 pulsing module and our new XeStrike™ ballast controlling two of our 35 watt XV-19 HID lamps one in each wing tip. Pulsing time is 1 Hz (60 pulses per minute on each channel).

XePulse™ 2

XeVision is offering the second generation, two channel pulse timing control, integrated in a fully solid-state standalone module - the XePulse™ 2 - that allows not only to control remote pulsing of single power mode (SPM) XeStrike™ ballasts but is also able to drive DPM (dual power mode) enabled XeStrike™ ballasts. The XePulse 1 has been discontinued.

The new XePulse™ 2 module is not a direct replacement for the original XePulse™ 1 module, but rather exceeds its capabilities and features, and is completely redesigned with a much smaller footprint. The XePulse™ 2 is specifically designed for use with our XeStrike™ ballasts with 3-pin power input, one pin being the control/trigger input.

The XePulse™ 2 does it all: Alternate or simultaneous pulsing, alternate or simultaneous dimming. Both modes can be combined.

XePulse™ 2 Description and Feature:

  1. Wide operating voltage range: 8-32 VDC battery power system.
  2. Reverse battery protection.
  3. Full solid-state technology.
  4. A 10% overlap timing between Ch1 and Ch2 based on our new ATM (asymmetric time modulation) technology.
  5. A 25 second warm-up time for proper plasma temperature before first pulsing sequence.
  6. Easy wiring based on the D-SUB DB-9 9-pin connector - even a pre-wired and color coded harness is available.
  7. On/off pulsing. Scroll down for video.
  8. High/low intensity pulsing (example 50/35 watt) - dimming mode. Scroll down for video.
  9. Designed for all XeStrike™ ballasts with 3-pin input (DPM or SPM).
  10. Small footprint - 1.57" x 1.57" x 0.79" (40 mm x 40 mm x 20 mm)
  11. Lightweight - 1.1 oz (28 g)
  12. ABS plastic housing (IP 66) designed for cockpit installation.
XePulse II module for HID pulsing and dimming

XePulse™ 2 module

The XePulse™ 2 main feature is XeVision's new asymmetric time modulation (ATM) technology. It has been developed based on the existing patented XePulse™ technology. It provides enhanced visual recognition and prolonged bulb life. Better visual footprint will help reduce bird strike occurrences.

Two channels, each with an almost unlimited number (up to 250) of HID XeStrike™ D-series ballasts can be driven.

The ballast power is remotely controlled by the XePulse™ 2 at the ballast, thus the XePulse™ 2 module is a passive device with low solid-state level current draw making its integration extremely safe. Note: Ballasts are powered directly and NOT through the pulsing module.

Description
Our patented HID Xenon capable pulsing system XePulse™ 2 (XV-PCM2) is specially designed to safely and reliably drive our proprietary electronic ballast series XeStrike™ XV4D.

The complete system for alternating/simultaneous pulsing consists of:

  • - one XePulse™ 2 pulsing module
  • - two (or more) XeStrike™ XV4D ballasts
  • - two (or more) HID landing/taxi lights
  • - one 3 position toggle switch (not included), see wiring options
  • - wiring & harness (wire harnes optional)

*) Only XeVision offers two unique ways of pulsing

With our XePulse™ 2 module and our XeStrike™ ballasts, two optically different methods of pulsing (wig-wagging) are possible.

1: on/off pulsing achieves the highest contrast and visibility. This method is available with all of our XeStrike™ series ballasts.

2: dimming is achieved by switching our 50/30 watt DPM type ballasts (XV4D) between the high output (50 watt) and low output (30 to 35 watt). This is triggered by a low power signal sent by the XePulse™ 2 module to the third pin of the ballast. Visibility of this method is obviously reduced, however, the lower contrast may be pleasing for the eye in certain applications.

XeVision's two distinct pulsing methods revealed: 1: on/off pulsing - 2. dimming (high/low intensity, DPM)

XePulse™ 2 Pulsing Module characteristics

Alternating or simultaneous pulsing rate ('wig-wag' rate) is preset to 1Hz (60 pulses per minute on each channel).

The XePulse™ 1 module is capable of driving various HID loads as shown below
12/14 volt aircraft:
2 x 35 watt HID system per channel or
1 x 50 watt HID system maximum per channel.
24/28 volt aircraft:
2 x 50 watt HID system per channel maximum.

XePulse™ 1 can be used with traditional incandescent lamps also.
14 volt systems 125 watts maximum per channel,
28 volt systems 250 watts maximum per channel.

If both channels are connected, pulsing is always alternating, otherwise simultaneous or alternating pulsing can be selected.
A low current three position toggle switch is used to select between:
off - continuous on - pulsing, no relay is required.

The pulsing module is best placed in a dry environment, one possible location is behind the instrument panel.

A video clip showing pulsing versus dimming is shown in our Youtube channel, linked at the footer of this page.

XePulse™ 1 - has been discontinued

  • - two XeStrike™ ballasts
  • - two landing/taxi lights
  • - one 3 position toggle switch (not included)
  • - wiring & harness

Alternating or simultaneous pulsing rate ('wig-wag' rate) is preset to 1Hz (60 pulses per minute on each channel).

The XePulse™ 1 module is capable of driving various HID loads:
14 volt systems 125 watts maximum per channel,
28 volt systems 250 watts maximum per channel.
